California Disaster Relief for Employers Affected by 2024 Fires
The California Employment Development Department (EDD) and the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) have announced relief measures for employers impacted by several significant fires in 2024:
Affected Fires:
- April 2024 - City of Oceanside (San Diego County) Pier Fire
- July 2024 - Siskiyou County Shelly Fire
- September 2024 - Sierra County Bear Fire
- November 2024 - Ventura County Mountain Fire
Relief Measures:
1. EDD Disaster Relief:
- Employers affected by the fires can request a 2-month extension to file state payroll reports and/or deposit payroll taxes without incurring penalties or interest.
- Written requests for extensions must be submitted within two months from the original due date of the payment or return.
2. CDTFA Tax Relief:
- Tax relief is available due to the governor’s state of emergency proclamations.
- Relief includes:
- An extension of up to three months to file and pay taxes or fees.
- Waiver of penalties and interest.
- Free replacement copies of lost tax records.
- The CDTFA may also extend deadlines for filings delayed by disruptions in mail services.
How to Request Relief:
- Taxpayers can submit a relief request by:
- Accessing their account on the CDTFA online services.
- Calling the Customer Service Center at 1 (800) 400-7115.
- Completing and submitting Form CDTFA-735 (Request for Relief from Penalty, Collection Cost Recovery Fee, and/or Interest).
