Quick Look

Week Of 10.07.2024

The Virginia Department of Taxation is providing automatic filing and payment extensions for final and estimated income tax payments and income tax returns made by individual and fiduciary taxpayers affected by Hurricane Helene.

This extension applies to returns or payments due on or after September 25, 2024, but on or before May 1, 2025. Affected taxpayers will receive a waiver of interest, late filing penalties, and late payment penalties if the returns and payments are made on or before June 1, 2025.

The relief applies to taxpayers located in Grayson, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise, and Wythe counties, as well as the City of Galax. Additional localities will qualify if they are declared disaster areas.

Taxpayers who have penalties assessed but believe they qualify should contact the Virginia Department of Taxation.

For other state tax returns and payments due on or after the first day of the disaster (this date varies by state, ranging from September 22-26, 2024), taxpayers may receive a waiver of penalties and interest if they can demonstrate hardship attributable to Hurricane Helene. Written requests for such hardship cases should be directed to the Virginia Department of Taxation, Customer Service Section Severe Storm Relief, P.O. Box 1115, Richmond, VA 23218-1115.
