In his January 21, 2025 State of the State address, Hawaii Governor Josh Green, M.D. did not propose any new tax initiatives, but instead highlighted the historic personal income tax cuts passed in 2024 that will be taking effect incrementally over the next seven years.

Hawaii Personal Income Tax—Hawaii 2025 tax season filing tips.

The Hawaii Department of Taxation announced that the tax filing season has begun and state income tax returns should be filed by the deadline, which is Monday, April 21, 2025. The federal tax season will open on Monday, January 27, 2025, and the filing deadline for tax returns or applications for an extension to file is Tuesday, April 15, 2025. The Department noted that e-filing improves accuracy, provides verification that the tax return was filed, and allows for refunds to process faster. Direct deposit is the quickest and safest way to receive a refund. Processing times are longer for taxpayers who choose to receive their refunds by check.
